Q&A: In linux, how can I tell what programs are using the network?

Question by McNeef: In linux, how can I tell what programs are using the network? I have noticed a sudden increase in network activity, i.e. the light on my network hub is blinking non-stop. After I closed down firefox, the light was still blinking wildly. So I kill -9′d the java process and it restarted itself. Then I looked at /proc/#PROCNUM/exe to get the full pathname to java, and it was /etc/bin/gij. So I renamed gij to keep it from restarting, and killed the process again. That stopped the flashing. Why would java require such inten ....> The Post Continues Here! <....
